METAL CRAFT 

Metal craft is one of the oldest cottage industries of Assam and these products are found in every household of assamese people.  There are two kinds of metal bell and brass metal. A range of domestic items are made from bell metal; formal Assamese dinner is served on Kahi(plate)and boti (bowls), Xorai , a bell metal which an offering tray symbolized the tradition of Assam; a decorative symbols during traditional functions or events as symbol of honour for guests. A great benefit of keeping food in bell metal is that food doesn’t get spoiled for a long period of time.


During the time of the Ahoms kings, the metal, gold and silver were mainly used for royalty, a consideration of pride and honour. There are two major production centers of the state Assam for metal craft. The brass metals in the Hajo region of Kamrup district and bell mental produces are famous in the Sarthbari region of the same district. 


Assam metal handicrafts are like identity for Assamese people, it’s not only fascinated by the local people but also the other too. With the changing times and demands, now there available new designs and patterns to the traditional metal craft of Assam with different outlook and more fascinating.







TERRACOTTA 

Terracotta as a medium of art of handicraft has been handed down generation after generation without a break.  The traditions of this art is being going on from ages and still continuing. An object of art made of a composition of clay and sand and baked with earthen color, a brownish red, is Terracotta. It was once considered to be the poor men’s craft but with it has marked significant image among all classes of people.

The kumara and Hiras are two traditional potter communities of Assam and while the Kumars use the wheel to produce his pots, the Hiras are probably the only potters in the world who do not use the wheel at all. Again, among the Hiras , only the womenfolk are engaged in pottery work.
Today the artwork is not limited to smaller group of people; it has been spread over where different styles of creativity are created. Starting from various common figures of gods and goddesses to mythological figures, earthen pots and lamps etc. also modern decorative has found a new life like vases, toys etc. in a modern way.


 PAINTINGS 

The Assam traditional paintings are as a source of inspiration to many art lover which is enrich the rich Assamese culture and heritage. From centuries, Assamese paintings are said to be derived from the mythological tales. The paintings reveal the traditional folk tales through different variation. In medieval Assam, different classes of painters evolve with time. The Assamese verses were painted on cloth and came to be known as manuscript paintings. The illustration and transcription of religious manuscripts by tribes like Likhaks, Patuas and khanikars . Especially it is said that among the three tribes Khanikars were the versatile among all the Assamese painters. Their work mainly created on Monasteries and the naam-ghars,who are known for their artistic creations.



                         
The manuscripts painting of Assam consisted of illustrations of stories from Bhagavata, the Puranas, The Ramayana and The Mahabharata.  The paintings of Assam can be categorized under two headings or schools- Assam school and Tai- Ahom School.  These categorized painting showcase beautiful variations of art.
The painting of Assam is a part of a rich cultural heritage of Assam. The paintings were influenced by many painting forms and were used to preserve and spread knowledge in the wider society about the traditional tales. Hopefully with changing times and dedicated artists will preserve and carry forward the art form for future use and expression.


HANDLOOM

Talking about Handloom of Assam the first thing come in mind is about the golden silk muga, the finest silk produced in Assam. It is said the women of Assam weave fairy tales in their looms. The people of northeast India fashioned their crafts, it’s like the people are following the amazing wealth of prehistoric memories, legends, mythology and history. Well weaving reflects some of the most important features of each community like combining bright colours and breathtaking patterns which reflect the uniqueness of Assam creativity in Handloom.
                


In the villages of Northeast India, in every houses of villages you experience a common sounds which heard mostly i.e. is the click-clack of the loom which the villagers produced with their hands. The women weavers produce from blankets to gamochas, mekhelas and chaddars ; It’s a traditional pride and love which is reflects in their work of creativity. It is said that Gandhiji during his famous tour to promote Khadi and swadeshi, was so moved that he remarked, ”Assamese women weave fairy tales in their clothes”. Weaving in Assam is filled with artistic creative sensibility and so intimately reflecting linked to folk life.

                                     


CANE AND BAMBOO CRAFTS

Cane and bamboo crafts have lot of contribution towards the lifestyle and economy of the Northeastern people of Assam. Those happen to the daily commonly used items ranging from furniture to roof tops to common households’ items. One of the most common item made of bamboo is Japi, made from stripes of bamboo and takow paat( dired palm leaves). Basically the Japi was made for the open aired workers like farmers but now Japi was also used as decorative items specially for decorating in drawing rooms of homes.

There are various items made of bamboo and canes and it have been used from the time we have even been born. Before this bamboo and cane handmade items were used as daily items for need. Like CHALANI (Sieve) woven with fine bamboo slips in a criss-cross way. It is used for sieving rice, paddy, tea-leaves etc. and also used for washing fish. Well various items are there which are used for preserving things or used for helpful means like catching fish or for household items and also gives a eco-friendly things. Some of them are namely:
  •          Bamboo handbags
  •          Bamboo stool ( Murrah)
  •          Winnowing Fan ( kula)
  •          Big Basket ( Dukula)
  •          Bamboo tray ( Dala)
  •          Jakai
  •          Dori




The land of vibrant beauty and the unsung about the history and culture of Assam is something whenever we experience; it gives you Goosebumps. Giving you a beautiful tour about the beauty and culture which is unique and might not even heard about.  “ Aapunarlok adoroni johnalu” (  welcome you!).

MAJULI MASKS


You might have heard about various traditional craft of Assam but this traditional craft is unique in its own, called as “ Majuli Masks”. Hidden into the folds of ignorance, preconceived notions and improper assumption, this land has tremendous cultural heritage with warm inhabitants.
Majuli traditional masks known as mukhas, it is use for religious performances and traditional dramas.It conceptualized as a tool by Shri Shankaradeva to make and depict the characters of Srimad Bhagwat to the devotes. Bascially masks helped to provide a physical form role to the puranic characters. Masks that are made for the characters of Brahma, Ganesha, Kumbhkarn, Nar simha etc. These masks are made by bamboo and cane, cloth, clay and rock color etc. sometimes wood are also used.  Three types of masks are prepared:
·         Mukha: Face mask
·         Lotokai Mukha: This type of mask help to move lips, eyes hands etc.
·         Bor Mukha: larger size mask.
The most beautiful part is every form of the mask is a task achieved by the deft hands of the artist, making it flourishing repository of the religious as well as traditional worth.
