METAL CRAFT OF ASSAM

Metal craft is one of the oldest cottage industries of Assam and these products are found in every household of assamese people.  There are two kinds of metal bell and brass metal. A range of domestic items are made from bell metal; formal Assamese dinner is served on Kahi(plate)and boti (bowls), Xorai , a bell metal which an offering tray symbolized the tradition of Assam; a decorative symbols during traditional functions or events as symbol of honour for guests. A great benefit of keeping food in bell metal is that food doesn’t get spoiled for a long period of time.

During the time of the Ahoms kings, the metal, gold and silver were mainly used for royalty, a consideration of pride and honour. There are two major production centers of the state Assam for metal craft. The brass metals in the Hajo region of Kamrup district and bell mental produces are famous in the Sarthbari region of the same district. 

Assam metal handicrafts are like identity for Assamese people, it’s not only fascinated by the local people but also the other too. With the changing times and demands, now there available new designs and patterns to the traditional metal craft of Assam with different outlook and more fascinating.
