MAJULI MASKS


You might have heard about various traditional craft of Assam but this traditional craft is unique in its own, called as “ Majuli Masks”. Hidden into the folds of ignorance, preconceived notions and improper assumption, this land has tremendous cultural heritage with warm inhabitants.
Majuli traditional masks known as mukhas, it is use for religious performances and traditional dramas.It conceptualized as a tool by Shri Shankaradeva to make and depict the characters of Srimad Bhagwat to the devotes. Bascially masks helped to provide a physical form role to the puranic characters. Masks that are made for the characters of Brahma, Ganesha, Kumbhkarn, Nar simha etc. These masks are made by bamboo and cane, cloth, clay and rock color etc. sometimes wood are also used.  Three types of masks are prepared:
·         Mukha: Face mask
·         Lotokai Mukha: This type of mask help to move lips, eyes hands etc.
·         Bor Mukha: larger size mask.
The most beautiful part is every form of the mask is a task achieved by the deft hands of the artist, making it flourishing repository of the religious as well as traditional worth.
